AutoFit in Excel

AutoFit in Excel is a feature that formats the cell’s width and height based on numerical or alphabetic data present in the cells.

The long strings in rows and columns can be altered using the options,

1. AutoFit Column Width
2. AutoFit Row Height

For example, consider the following table listing the Seven Wonders of the World in column A. We need to use the following steps to understand how AutoFit in excel works.



The steps used to enable AutoFit in excel are as follows:
 
Step 1: Add the data to the excel sheet.

Step 2: Drag the mouse pointer at the end of column A’s header.

Step 3: A double-headed arrow appears between two adjacent column headers.
Double click on the double-headed arrow.



The cells in column A are resized based on the text string lengths in the cells.



Therefore, we can automatically adjust the cell’s height and width using AutoFit in excel.

We can rescale the cell size with AutoFit in excel using five methods. They are:

1. AutoFit Using Double Click On The Mouse
2. AutoFit Using The Select And Drop Option
3. AutoFit Using A Menu With Few Tabs
4. AutoFit Using AutoFit Row Height Button
5. AutoFit Using The Wrap Text Button

We can enable AutoFit in Excel from the excel ribbon:

1. Select the cells with values.
2. Go to the Home tab.
3. Click on the Format option from the Cells group.
4. Choose AutoFit Row Height or AutoFit Column Width options as required.



Alternatively, we can use the shortcut key for AutoFit in excel (Ctrl + H + O + I and Ctrl + H + O + A for columns and rows respectively)
